Kundalwadi Farmers Build Grand Vitthal-Rukmini Temple Without External Funding

The Vanjari community in Kundalwadi just built a beautiful new Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata temple. It is entirely their own creation. Local farmers and laborers funded and completed the whole project. From day one, the residents stood firm against outside funding, political donations, or government grants. They built it themselves. This effort beautifully captures the heart of the Varkari sampradaya. It deeply echoes the core teachings of self-reliance, complete equality, and unselfish devotion to God.

Building it took months of hard, collective sweat and careful planning. Community members gave what they could spare. Agricultural income, crop sales, and daily wages paid for cement, stones, and building materials. The dedication was immense. Many residents came straight from their fields to work on the temple grounds. The village women stepped up too. They prepared meals for the workers and tackled lighter construction tasks. This profound unity transformed the entire temple construction into a true community movement.

Temple Architecture and Sacred Idols

Inside the temple rest carefully sculpted marble idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata. The architecture strictly honors traditional Maharashtrian design principles. It is breathtaking. The main sanctum is spacious and well-ventilated, creating a peaceful environment for daily worship, continuous chanting of Hari Path, and the joyous विठ्ठलनामाचा गजर. It comfortably hosts massive community gatherings during major festivals like Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi. During local processions, the wide entrance effortlessly welcomes multiple Dindis at once.

Aja Ekadashi and Fasting Traditions

Yesterday was the deeply auspicious occasion of Aja Ekadashi. Across Maharashtra, devotees observed strict fasting rules and visited Pandharpur for Vitthal-Rukmini darshan. In Kundalwadi, the new temple changed everything. Local residents, especially senior citizens who cannot travel far, observed these sacred traditions closer to home. During Ekadashi, वारकरी observe a strict Upvas. They eat only specific foods like sabudana, bhagar, and fruits while spending the day reciting Abhangs.

To mark Aja Ekadashi, the Kundalwadi temple committee organized special poojas and continuous Nama Japa. The devotion continues daily. A permanent schedule is now set for morning Kakad Aarti and evening Dhoop Aarti. They strictly follow the authentic Varkari sampradaya guidelines established by Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj.

A Permanent Center for Spiritual Education

Beyond daily prayers, the temple serves a broader educational purpose. Local kirtankars and pravachankars now have a dedicated space to perform Kirtan and deliver discourses on Sant literature. It is a wonderful shift. The temple committee plans to organize regular reading sessions of the Dnyaneshwari and Tukaram Gatha. This initiative ensures the younger generation understands the deep meaning behind the Abhangs and the historical importance of पंढरीची वारी.
