Plain-language definitions for the key terms you'll come across while reading about Pandharpur Wari.
- Wari
- The annual foot pilgrimage to Pandharpur undertaken by Warkari devotees, most famously the Ashadhi Wari timed to Ashadhi Ekadashi.
- Palkhi
- The palanquin carrying a saint's paduka (holy footwear) during the Wari procession.
- Dindi
- A group of Warkari devotees who walk together as an organized troupe within a larger palkhi procession.
- Mukkam
- The overnight halt of a palkhi procession at a particular village.
- Ringan Sohala
- A ceremonial circular or standing run of the palkhi's lead horse (Ashwa) around the paduka palanquin, held at fixed points along the route.
- Warkari
- A devotee of the Varkari movement, a centuries-old Vaishnava devotional tradition centered on Vitthal of Pandharpur.
- Ashadhi Ekadashi
- The eleventh lunar day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month Ashadha, the culmination date of the Pandharpur Wari.
- Paduka
- The holy footwear/sandals of a saint, carried in the palkhi as the object of veneration during the procession.
- Abhang
- A devotional poem/hymn form composed by Varkari saint-poets, sung throughout the Wari.
